My son Hudson is OBSESSED with Blippi. Can all the Mamas & Papas raise your hand if you have a toddler who is requesting to watch Blippi AD NAUSEAM?! (Send wine and headphones.)
My only appropriate response to this is to draw him in his glory wearing Blippi’s garb. Even when he asks for his children’s vitamin (which are Frozen-shaped because he has a very opinionated older sister), he pulls out ANY shape and yells, “BLIPPI ONE!”
Gosh, I love 2-year-olds.
Side note…. I wonder if Blippi has any kids books out there and needs an illustrator…..
Since I have been home taking care of Robson the last few months, AND trying to keep up with my full-time gig – doing any additional sketching seems like a pipe dream! BUT… once in a while, I am able to carve out a precious hour or two to do some art for myself.
Here are a few I have done so far:
Robson in the Woods admiring the trees as she does on our daily walks. 🙂 [digital]
Robson running around with multiple sweaters all day. Sometimes she wears 3 at a time. 🙂 [digital]
Robson and I go to the same park almost every day near our house. I love looking at this massive tree that reminds me of a mysterious cave. I finally drew it from memory. 🙂 [digital]
This October – December was the busiest on record, what with starting a new show at the studio, piles of freelance, and selling and buying a house…… so sadly my sketches took a backseat. I managed to squeak out a few, here they are!
For Inktober 2015:
A couple sketches in time for “Back to the Future” Day! [Brush pen on Moleskine sketchbook.]
A couple sketches of some of the regular dogs that frequent our studio 🙂 [Brush pen on Moleskine sketchbook.]
And of course a sketch of our cat Mowgli in his favourite position.
I managed to fit in two commissions done as Christmas gifts for clients. The first one was for a couple who had just gotten married and loved trees, hence the background. The second was for someone who is a composer. Both digital.
We announced our big news on the social medias today, and I did this little illustration for the occasion.
Our hearts are dancing, and we breathe in these moments of joy after a long journey. 😀 😀
A friend contacted me to do a commission for her and her hubby who were going to celebrate an anniversary. They share a love of visiting wineries, so she told me that she would love to have that incorporated somehow into it.
She also said that their phrase they always say to each other is “That’s amore!”, so I wanted to make sure I included that somewhere.
Here is what I came up with!
Rough sketch [digital]:
I was asked to do a few exploratory character designs for a project, and here is what I came up with! I tried a few different styles, and it was fun just to draw a few different versions of the character I had in my head.
Brush pen and pencil crayon:
Life and work has been busy, so I haven’t been able to do many OITNB sketches lately – but watching season 3 now has made me want to do the rest of the cast!
Up next: Poussey & Taystee with their fun antics 🙂 I did this one digitally. Stay tuned for more of the cast in sketch form!
A few months back, I decided to do a sketch series based on the much-loved characters from BBC’s “Downton Abbey”. Here is a sampling of a few of them:
Soon after I posted the sketch of Robert & Cora Crawley (actors Hugh Bonneville & Elizabeth McGovern – see above in top right), I had someone contact me on Twitter. She said she was family friends with Elizabeth McGovern, who apparently also plays in a band called “Sadie & the Hotheads”. She wanted to know if I would do another sketch of her in the same style – but this time also as her playing in her band. She wanted to give it to her as a birthday gift.
Of course, I did have my doubts that she actually “knew” her – who wouldn’t in this age of social media?? But I did the drawing anyway; it sounded like a fun idea. See below what resulted.
Here is the sketch; I did the roughs in pencil, but cleaned it up digitally so I could email it to her in England to print out and frame.
A cool moment, indeed 🙂 High five, Twitter!
One of my favourites things to do is to do sketches or illustrations for people for special occasions. It is always surprising when people contact me, and what they want drawn – it’s never a dull moment!
This one was fun – a childhood friend contacted me and said that a good friend of her was getting married, and they wanted to give her and her fiance a special gift at the wedding shower. But they also wanted a version of the drawing done like a colouring book, so the kids could colour it! That was a fantastic idea, I thought!
Here is the rough sketch I did of them – colerase blue pencil on animation paper. [I did a bunch of sketches from the pics my friend sent me, but this was the sketch I liked the most.]
Here is the “colouring book” version of the drawing. I cleaned it up digitally instead of inking it by hand because then it takes a while to get rid of the blue pencil.
Here is the final coloured illustration – my friend told me she always wears purple, so I made sure to make her dress purple 🙂 I also added some details from an outfit she was wearing in one of the photos I was sent. [See below for engagement photo of Steve & Carolyn to compare to drawing.]
Congrats Steve & Carolyn! Hope you liked the illustration 🙂
UPDATED JULY 6, 2014:
I did a quick sketch of Pennsatucky and decided to tweet it out the actress who plays her TOO well – Taryn Manning – for fun! 🙂 To my complete surprise, she tweeted me back! See below 🙂
The wifey and I have jumped on board for the new-ish Netflix series, “Orange is the New Black”…. even though a lot of the time our mouths are gaping open and asking “WHAT did they just say???!!!”
Ya can’t deny the characters are amazing, and having completed Season 2…. what a great storyline! I decided to draw all the characters, but I started with Red [see below]. And then I heard of this fanart competition, and decided to create something for that too. [see above] Why not???
