This quarantine time has made me see I am way better at being a human DOING, rather than a human BEING. I like to be busy. I don’t like to be still and feel hard things. It’s ugh, and uncomfortable. But this time is teaching me that’s exactly what I need to do.
Feel it. Stay with it. See what it can teach you.
This illustration came to me when I jogged passed one of my fav trees this week. Man, it felt good to dig out my pencils & ink pens and lose myself on paper. (Drawing on toothy watercolour paper is also really satisfying. My Moleskine sketchbook was full so I had to – happy accident.)
Hope everyone remembers to slow down! Love to you all.
One of the best shows Netflix has put out – especially if you are a child of the 80s – has been “Stranger Things”! I just HAD to draw these guys!
Can’t wait for season 2!! Barb….are you out there….????!!
This October – December was the busiest on record, what with starting a new show at the studio, piles of freelance, and selling and buying a house…… so sadly my sketches took a backseat. I managed to squeak out a few, here they are!
For Inktober 2015:
A couple sketches in time for “Back to the Future” Day! [Brush pen on Moleskine sketchbook.]
A couple sketches of some of the regular dogs that frequent our studio 🙂 [Brush pen on Moleskine sketchbook.]
And of course a sketch of our cat Mowgli in his favourite position.
I managed to fit in two commissions done as Christmas gifts for clients. The first one was for a couple who had just gotten married and loved trees, hence the background. The second was for someone who is a composer. Both digital.
I was asked to do a few exploratory character designs for a project, and here is what I came up with! I tried a few different styles, and it was fun just to draw a few different versions of the character I had in my head.

Two more additions to my Downton Abbey sketch series – the Crawley sisters, & O’Brien!
For my previous Downton sketches, click https://staceychomiak.wordpress.com/2014/01/25/downton-abbey-sketches-part-1/ and https://staceychomiak.wordpress.com/2014/02/12/downton-abbey-sketches-the-bates-mrs-hughes/
WHO doesn’t LOVE “Downton Abbey“??? Oh my word we discovered it after season 1 had aired in the UK, and once we got our hands on it over here in Canada, we fell in love with the characters immediately.
We just finished watching season 4, and I decided to do something that is long overdue – draw the characters! So far I have done three of the cast members – see below. Also scroll to the bottom to see who tweeted at me after my first sketch!
Carson [Jim Carter]
Mrs. Patmore [Lesley Nicol]
The Dowager Countess [played of course by Dame Maggie Smith]
Robert (Hugh Bonneville) & Cora Crawley (Elizabeth McGovern)
Moseley – just gotta love him! (Kevin Doyle)
Now to tackle the rest of the cast… stay tuned!
This year I was able to do a few commissions for people as Christmas gifts [see previous post]…. this is something I as an artist take super seriously, and just love the opportunity to create these special gifts for people!
The first one was for a friend from the studio. She was flying home to the East coast for Christmas, and wanted to give her mom a “cartoon” portrait of her, her brother and her parents. They were a very fun bunch to draw, and apparently when her mom opened it, she said “Oh my soul!”. That makes me SO happy.

The second one was super special. A friend had lost her dad a few months ago to cancer, and her daughter had really fond memories of him carrying her on his shoulders. So for Christmas she wanted Santa to give her daughter a drawing of her and “Papa” together. I ended up doing two versions of the drawing, which I almost never do. The first one I did was a bit more cartoony, and the second one was a bit more realistic. I felt like it was such a huge honor to capture this moment, I just wanted to make sure I got it right. 🙂

What do Chaplin, Sam Elliott and Wolverine have in common???
Except they were requests in my Movember sketch challenge! If people give money to this cause, they earn the right to suggest a drawing! So here is Day 3, 4 and 5!
