In doing my own sketch series for “Orange is the New Black”, I thought I would do Norma in a bit of a different media – watercolour. I need to get back into the real paints!! Here is how she turned out, step-by-step:
1 – Rough sketch:
2 – Blocking in the skin colour:
3 – Adding hair and shirt colour
4 – Final details with brush pen and pigma liner
Up next in my Orange is the New Black series of sketches – Big Boo! She is tough to love but still loveable 🙂 [But don’t mess with her!]
Life and work has been busy, so I haven’t been able to do many OITNB sketches lately – but watching season 3 now has made me want to do the rest of the cast!
Up next: Poussey & Taystee with their fun antics 🙂 I did this one digitally. Stay tuned for more of the cast in sketch form!
A few months back, I decided to do a sketch series based on the much-loved characters from BBC’s “Downton Abbey”. Here is a sampling of a few of them:
Soon after I posted the sketch of Robert & Cora Crawley (actors Hugh Bonneville & Elizabeth McGovern – see above in top right), I had someone contact me on Twitter. She said she was family friends with Elizabeth McGovern, who apparently also plays in a band called “Sadie & the Hotheads”. She wanted to know if I would do another sketch of her in the same style – but this time also as her playing in her band. She wanted to give it to her as a birthday gift.
Of course, I did have my doubts that she actually “knew” her – who wouldn’t in this age of social media?? But I did the drawing anyway; it sounded like a fun idea. See below what resulted.
Here is the sketch; I did the roughs in pencil, but cleaned it up digitally so I could email it to her in England to print out and frame.
A cool moment, indeed 🙂 High five, Twitter!
UPDATED JULY 6, 2014:
I did a quick sketch of Pennsatucky and decided to tweet it out the actress who plays her TOO well – Taryn Manning – for fun! 🙂 To my complete surprise, she tweeted me back! See below 🙂
The wifey and I have jumped on board for the new-ish Netflix series, “Orange is the New Black”…. even though a lot of the time our mouths are gaping open and asking “WHAT did they just say???!!!”
Ya can’t deny the characters are amazing, and having completed Season 2…. what a great storyline! I decided to draw all the characters, but I started with Red [see below]. And then I heard of this fanart competition, and decided to create something for that too. [see above] Why not???
Like many, many people, I grew up watching “The Carol Burnett Show”. My parents always had always loved those comedy shows, and while I may not have understood some [most] of the sketches they did, I could not help but love this wacky, loud, fun-loving female host who would not hesitate to make herself look ridiculous for a laugh. But there was kindness in her too – it was never mean-spirited comedy, just silly for the sake of fun. To this day I still remember dying laughing at the sketch of her playing the game “Sorry”, or her wearing the famed “Gone With the Wind” dress – more for her facial expression than anything else!
As I grew older, I followed her career and got excited to see her in a few films and even when she would guest-star on TV shows like “Touched By An Angel”. Last year, my wonderful wife sent me a link to check out – Carol Burnett was doing one live show in 2014 – and it was in Seattle. We HAD to go!!
In my excitement leading up to the show, I did a sketch of her [see above] in the famous dress 🙂 She did not disappoint! At age 81, she almost danced out on stage [in high heels!], and proceeded to regale her favourite sketches from her show, her most memorable moments, and answered any and all questions the packed-out audience had for her.
What an AMAZING night! Thank you Carol, for adding so much joy and laughter into this world of ours!
Two more additions to my Downton Abbey sketch series – the Crawley sisters, & O’Brien!

Stay tuned for more!
WHO doesn’t LOVE “Downton Abbey“??? Oh my word we discovered it after season 1 had aired in the UK, and once we got our hands on it over here in Canada, we fell in love with the characters immediately.
We just finished watching season 4, and I decided to do something that is long overdue – draw the characters! So far I have done three of the cast members – see below. Also scroll to the bottom to see who tweeted at me after my first sketch!
Carson [Jim Carter]
Mrs. Patmore [Lesley Nicol]
The Dowager Countess [played of course by Dame Maggie Smith]
Robert (Hugh Bonneville) & Cora Crawley (Elizabeth McGovern)
Moseley – just gotta love him! (Kevin Doyle)
Now to tackle the rest of the cast… stay tuned!
