I choose softness.

I’m still here, my friends ❤️‍🩹

Sometimes grief

knocks the wind right out of us.

I’ve been trying to catch my breath

these last few weeks.

It’s weird in life,

how we think we’re building something,

and then the tide comes in

and takes it all away.

So quickly.

All I know,

is heartbreak hurts.

No matter how many times

you go through it.

Love is real,

which is why heartbreak hurts.

There’s no making this easier.

And,

There’s no speeding this up.

And,

We must feel our way through.

And,

We were made for healing.

And,

We can rebuild.

Even when the ache of loss groans painfully in my chest,

I can still admire

how the early evening sun creates long beautiful shadows.

How my son’s arms feel

tightly wrapped around me,

how my daughter looks at me

when she says my name.

The ache is there,

throbbing through it all.

But not forever.

Being human

is a terrible and magnificent

mystery sometimes.

I have found love, support and solace

in afternoon river walks,

long voice notes,

fresh baked (gf!) cookies

and bike rides heavy with sorrow.

All I know is

I’m still standing strong with Mary Oliver:

“If you suddenly & unexpectedly feel joy,

don’t hesitate,

give into it.”

I never hesitate,

and I think,

that’s how I continue to move forward.

It’s not easy

being an open hearted person

in a world that teaches us

to clutch everything protectively

to our chest.

In a world that’s trying to divide us,

make us hard.

I choose softness.

I have to believe that the love we invest –

wherever and with whomever,

it matters.

It matters to me.

Even if it’s not forever.

Stay soft, my beautiful friends. ❤️‍🩹🏳️‍🌈
